Did You Know?

A rowing boat used to link up with incoming liners as they passed Cléire in the 1860s to retrieve transatlantic messages thrown overboard in sealed containers. The messages were then forwarded by telegraph from the Telegraph Station on the island, and arrived in London some six hours earlier than would otherwise be the case. It’s said that the islanders were the first Europeans to hear of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1865.
