Mystical, rugged, remote and enchanting, Ireland’s islands captivate everyone who visits. But despite being wild and windswept, these islands are surprisingly easy to get to from plenty of access points up and down the mainland.
Some, such as Achill Island, are attached to mainland by a bridge; others can be accessed by small boat, ferry or even by air. And you don’t have to complete your island adventure in a single day trip – staying a few nights or longer on one of the many inhabited islands is very worthwhile or even try island hopping around the West Coast Islands to get a flavour of more than one magical off shore island.
Most ferry ports are serviced by coaches and buses, so all you have to do is check the timetable for the date you want to travel on websites such as www.irishrail.ie, www.Buseireann.ie or www.aerarann.com
- To find out exactly how to get to your chosen island from towns and cities around Ireland, go to Take me to the Island at the end of each Island description.
- Each ferry operator will provide information on coach/bus services to get you to their ferry port – just select your ferry operator under Take me to the Island for more information.
Remember:
The weather can change suddenly and dramatically around Ireland’s coastline, so it’s worth checking sailing times with the ferry or boat operator as close to your travelling time as possible. It’s also a good idea to book your crossing in advance, as Ireland’s islands are extremely popular especially in high summer. The boats vary from large ferries to smaller vessels. Many Ferry operators offer online booking now.
